BIO

From fine art to healing art...

Fine artist, Beverley A. Pattenden’s interest in Oriental Healing Arts began after a car accident in 2004, when she discovered life altering pain relief through acupuncture. She entered into an intensive Oriental Medicine study program exclusive to Shiatsu Shin Tai at the International School of Shiatsu.Beverley established Creative Human Potential - a practice founded on the synthesis of Zen Shiatsu, Shin Tai and body mind energetics, combining this with her own innovative concepts regarding the modern body mind complex and holistic lifestyle.

Synchronously, Beverley developed a series of specialized exercise programs, she has entitled "Chop Wood Carry Water". These therapeutic fusion exercises begin with meditation, breath work, stretches, micro movements and free form movement are designed  for self awareness and self alignment and stimulating your innate healing powers.

Realizing the effectiveness of this multi dimensional work, Beverley’s moxie continues as she launches "The Cinnabar Foundation" a collaborative group of healing artists who specialize in working with survivors of trauma.

The Practitioner

"The shiatsu practitioner must have a healthy body, high intelligence and well developed intuition.

They must be strong and should not tire easily.  Their thinking must be clear and precise and their movement and actions must spring from a deep sense of intuition.

Shiatsu has a broad view ~ it helps to bring world peace for it helps to bring the receiver into harmony with the greater whole".

Beverley Pattenden

is a passionate conservationist, humanitarian, fine artist, Shiatsu Shin Tai therapist and holistic health counselor. But at the moment, the outspoken British ex pat who resides in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, is wrestling with her conscience. She’s in a Saint-Germaine boutique in Paris, where she’s discovered the most outrageous pair of blue-dyed python boots. And then it washes over her: I’m not perfect.
“Having sexy shoes is not against what I stand for,” the energetic blonde says. Welcome to the dichotomy that is Pattenden’s life.
In an era when we’re bombarded by terms like “green,” “sustainable” and “holistic,” living a smart, balanced lifestyle has become an even greater challenge. It’s no different for Pattenden, a progressive thinker, who believes that the key to achieving harmony is less about striving for perfection and more about simply engaging. Whether she’s perceived as a healer, activist or a fashionista, what matters most to Pattenden is that her actions be authentic.
Pattenden began practicing Shiatsu amid an extended period when she confronted several deeply unsettling personal issues—she divorced, faced the prospect of being a single parent, closed her art gallery and recovered from a traumatic car accident. Pattenden recalls the experience as “going into the muck.” She was detached from her former identities and searching for some hint of direction.
The realization that helped Pattenden emerge was that she was the one who was ultimately responsible for her life, from the choices that drove her to that dark, dense mindset to the opportunities that would allow her to shed them—and the fear attached to them.
Shiatsu Shin Tai and the lifestyle it requires made sense to Pattenden the moment she was able to marry the practice with her passion for creativity. An interest in drawing as a child became a full-blown love affair as a student at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Cultivating spiritual growth, in her eyes, was the height of creativity.
“In adopting these practices that are designed to evolve the soul, you become more refined, more sensitive,” Pattenden, says. “It’s a more exquisite way to move through life because it’s experiential. We tap into our innate awareness. We start to eat different foods, think different thoughts and make different lifestyle choices.”
The goal of Shiatsu Shin Tai therapy is to create relaxation and space within the body and the mind, which, in turn, encourage self-healing. Pattenden’s aim is to teach others to integrate the comprehensive tools she’s learned through her practice that will, in the short-term, better equip them to manage daily stressors and, ultimately, enable them to live fully engaging, healthy and authentic lives.
Hers is not a quick fix approach. One does not become healthy overnight. Still striving, Pattenden walks the line every day between conscious and considerate resident and hurried, shortsighted consumer, because that line shifts every day.
“Living creatively does not necessarily apply to the arts but to an attitude of what is possible – a forward thinking, open mind that is in harmony between the body, mind and soul as well as in one’s life in a skillful and inspirational way allows us to adapt to stress very differently and recreate our everyday lives,” Pattenden says. “And I think the authenticity, maybe that’s the peace.”

CHOP WOOD オ CARRY WATER

"Chop wood and carry water before enlightenment, chop wood and carry water after enlightenment".

Chop Wood オ Carry Water is an integrative series of therapeutic & restorative exercises and simple movements designed for injury prevention and health preservation.

This articulation of gross and micro movements create a state of ease and equilibrium that allow one to relate to one’s own body in a profound, holistic, and proactive way.  This results in fewer restrictions encouraging the body to move more freely allowing for optimum life experience, creativity, clarity and  longevity.

Chop Wood オ Carry Water has its foundation in Oriental Medical Theory, integrating breathing techniques, stretching, yoga, QiGong, aerobic movement, strength training and free form movement.  Re balancing the body on a consistent basis is one of the most productive ways of activating the body’s natural healing powers.

Both injury and illness are due to blocked, lack of or excess Qi ~ our vital energy. Restriction of breath and movement constricts our life force, skewing our sense of awareness.  Mobilizing Qi harmonizes the body’s natural functions and stimulate its innate ability to self heal returning the body to a balanced state.

The advanced work includes advanced breathing techniques, healing sounds, vitality exercises and specific movements to stimulate and expand awareness of self.

“Ultimate Stretch” treatments

  $50.00 for a 1/2 hour session.
... therapeutic as it is exquisite and luxurious!

This extremely sophisticated and refined stretching treatment is a fusion of many different assisted stretching techniques (meridian, Thai, proprioceptive), specific acupressure points and includes both visual and hands on diagnosis for individualized treatment.

This gentle therapy does not focus on one part of the body, even if the health problem is localized; the whole body becomes involved, including the mind and our emotions that directly affect our health and vitality.

Our modern bodies are in a constant state of compression, due to a combination of stress, diet, lifestyle, and exercises that are rigid in practice by either forcing the body into static “fixed” positions or creating hardened, overly contracted muscles.

By skillfully stimulating the imbalanced muscle, fascia and meridians (energetic pathways that run throughout the entire body), de-compressing the muscles and releasing stress patterns in the body we open up the entire body, recover our natural movement, restore the balanced flow of energy, alleviate pain and symptoms, and aid in aligning the bone structure.

Whether you want to experience just feeling great or are suffering from pain somewhere in your body, unhealthy, stressed, hardened, fixed muscle are a part of the problem. These specific stretch treatments are a dynamic complement to your existing health regimens and a truly unique way to experience yourself in your own body.

This bodywork treatment is:
   Deeply relaxing
Improves flexibility and mobility of muscles, tendons & ligaments
Strengthens weak muscle & relaxes tense muscle
   Noticeably reduces pain and stiffness
Regain natural movement in the whole body
Aligns whole body structure, improving posture
   Alleviates pain and symptoms
   Long term effects
Increased circulation (blood & lymphatic systems)

Excellent for disc problems and for both pre and postoperative back surgery
   Safe and gentle
